Ashley Carruth

I am the Dean of Experiential Education at Animas High School in Durango, CO and the co-founder of San Juan Mountain SOLES (an outdoor education and leadership development organization for high school girls). I teach avalanche education for Fort Lewis College and San Juan Expeditions. I began my journey in snow sports as the daughter of a Wyoming cowboy turned US Ski team member. I had no choice but to throw on my brother's hand-me-down ski boots and bang some gates. However, my true passion quickly became backcountry skiing; the quiet and solitude coupled with the physical challenge drew me in. As an educator, I have sought ways to expose my students to the mountains, and to backcountry winter navigation in specific, which led me to pursue my ITC avalanche certification. I aspire to make avalanche education more accessible to the youth I serve throughout the San Juan Mountains and to inspire more youth to lead healthy and fulfilling lives rooted in wild places, competent leadership, and authentic community engagement.
