When traveling in avalanche terrain limit your exposure. Once you’ve determined the terrain is appropriate for the avalanche conditions, manage your risk by how you travel through the terrain. Spread out, move from safer zone to safer zone quickly and efficiently. Determine regrouping/terrain viewing spots that are out of the avalanche path and allow for the best view of your partners and upcoming terrain. Be aware of these techniques both on the uphill and the downhill.
- Match your terrain choice and travel plan to the conditions
- Only one person in the avalanche path at a time
- Watch your partner from a safe spot
- Don’t group up in exposed terrain. If something goes wrong you do not want more than one victim
