Level 3 Instructor Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Level 3 Course Leader

  • Instructor experience on 3 or more AIARE Level 3 courses
  • Letter of recommendation from a supervising AIARE Course Leader outlining courses taught, professional leadership experience and teaching experience.
  • AIARE Level 3 Course certificate
  • AIARE Instructor Training for Level 1 and Level 2
  • Course Leader experience on Level 2 avalanche courses
  • Experience in at least two different snow climates
  • AAA membership
  • Minimum five years professional leadership experience in backcountry terrain

Required Continued Professional Development

  • AIARE IT/IRC Course (minimum every 3 years)

Recommended Qualifications

  • AMGA Ski Guide or AMGA Ski Mountaineering Guide certificate or an IFMGA affiliate certificate
  • Three years professional decision-making experience in another type of avalanche related work (avalanche safety, avalanche control, research, etc.)
  • Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2 Avalanche Course certification

Instructors Level 3

Required Qualifications

  • Recent observation of an AIARE Level 3 course.
  • AIARE Instructor Training for Level 1, Level 2
  • Worked as an instructor on an AIARE Level 1 and Level 2 courses
  • Professional decision-making experience in another type of avalanche related work (avalanche safety, avalanche control, research, etc.) †
  • AAA membership
  • Minimum five years professional leadership experience in backcountry terrain

Required Continued Professional Development

  • AIARE IT/IRC Course (minimum every 3 years)

Recommended Qualifications

  • Experience in various snow climates
  • AMGA Ski Guide or Ski Mountaineering Guide certificate OR equivalent IFMGA recognized certificate
  • AAA certified instructor
  • Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2 Avalanche Course certificate

† Equivalent training/experience must be approved by the AIARE Technical Director.
